hey Enduradad,

It's been a long time. Is Choo-Choo racing GFT this year? We ,both, are racing IMSwiss this summer and Sue is going to also race IMFla. But I am undecided on what to do this fall. If I wind up doing most of the training on the bike w/Sue up through the fall, GFT would defintely become very, very tempting! Penguin, KinzuJim, LabRat, Dayrl......U out there??

oh, one more thing, Speaking of CHOO-CHOO, MORE STONES!!

I have not heard from Choo Choo in years. I also wonder if Yakabo is still out there. We could use a good weatherman.
Fred,
Who will call this years race? Anyone going to make a video?

E-Dad,
Glad you are in too. Yes, I am that cousin from Louisville. I live in Evergreen, CO now. It is in the mountains outside of Denver, and a long way from Kentucky. I will most likely die here because we love it. I have done 3 IM's with GFT 99 being my first. My whole family is coming, my wife, son, daughter, Mom, two sisters, and two nieces. I think of it like a vacation with me doing a long workout on Saturday. I missed my kids too much last year. I have not heard from Choo Choo in a LONG time. I will try to track down some info. We have mutual friends in Chattanooga, and my coach may know as well. Off to the pool tomorrow for my first team workout of the year. Wish me well.

Matt,  Let your crew know I'll be adopting them for my support crew too.

You may be a TRI Nut if:
You've ever sat in your living room cleaning spokes while watching an old IM video to beat the winter blues.

What's the weather for everyones training? 1/2" of ice here in Indiana.
Do Girl Scout cookies count as training food?
Matt,  e-mail me mbrown@qualex.com and tell me about the kids

E-dad,

How's the weather? You had to ask. Today was upper eighties, but very windy. I did a two hour ride, went through two bottles of Cytomax. Tomorrow we could hit 90. I'm really looking forward to my Sunday long run.

Got a heart rate monitor last week. Still trying to figure it out. With their formula, my max heart rate is at 180.5. I know for a fact that I have had it over 210. Do I go with the 210 or 180.5? Frey and Huddle say the best way to find max heart rate is to "go out and achieve it."

Train safe, train smart, and...train like hell!

It’s great to see all the tribe members posting again. I lost my IM virginity back in 1999 at the GFT so this race has always been very special to me. I met so many really neat people who were always willing to share their thoughts and insights. I still have the picture of 10 of heading out for group ride of the run course prior to the race that ended up being and off roading adventure through the construction zone – Marcy, Kerri, Yak, Matt, Gordon, IP and bless her heart Suzi. I wish I could figure out how to post the picture.

I have been real busy the last year training and competing. I did the Grand Columbian out in Washington last September and it is an awesome independent IM worth considering. I am in the process of really ramping up the training because I am doing IM Brazil in 3 months. There are 7 of us (5 racing) from our local tri club going done to Brazil - should be a blast. Lots of time on the trainer because the weather sucks in the Midwest in the winter. Way too much snow, ice, wind and sub zero wind chill.

Matt, We have been to Evergreen and it is beautiful - I can understand why you don't want to leave. Stayed at the Highland Bed & Breakfast and hiked west of town.

Bubba & Sue, Glad to see you are still hitting it hard. IM Swiss should be awesome. I bet the run won’t near as difficult at the Blue Devil with the 5 laps of hills – ugh!

EDad, What can I say? You will be in great shape by race day. Just keeping up with all those kids will get you in shape.

Kerry, I will be more than willing to trade you some of this snow, ice, wind, sub zero wind chill for a couple of sunny days in the 80’s. I don’t even care what the humidity is!!

Be careful out there.

More Stones and Rock on Suzi.

One of the things I love about IM is you have time to think.  Like:

I wonder why no women swim at the Y at 5am?  I wonder why the Kick-Boxing class is only women @5am and why that class is always full?  Hmmm????

This year I know how to train for IM, but I wonder if I can get back without getting hurt?

What ever happened to the boat they found in Lake Minneola?

Since defizzed coke works, should I try MT Dew? what about Red Bull? Natascha Badmann is sponsored by RB does she use it on the bike?  Is Red Bull, Mt Dew, and Gatorade a preformance enhancing drug? Hmmm?

Hello old Tribe mates. Most of you won't remember me but I see a couple of old names on this forum so I know there are still a couple of old school - original tribe members here. E-dad and Choo Choo, man I haven't heard from you guys in several years. I've been a racing fool, just haven't made my way down to Fred-ville in several years. Just wanted to give a shout out to those still around. I am still in touch with Hammy, Candyman, Woody, run into Yakabo from time to time, and a few others. Glad to see the Tribe is alive and well.

Steve, can we talk you into coming down with us?  Does Yak still race with Garfield? Ask him for a forcast for 10/25.

I forgot just how poeple treat you when they find out you get up at 4am to go train. How does everyone talk themselves out of bed early to train?
I wonder if it would be better to run at night this fall so my body is ready for it? Swim and bike am., run pm.?

Does it scare anyone else to know we just used up one more month?

E-Dad,

Is it possible that it was the scraggly "BILL-the-Cat" that used to ride tandem with Yak?

And nothing was more hilarious than the "TRIBE" doing their odd version of 'More Stones' at the Talent Show, Summer Bay venue!!

Opps, yes Bill the Cat.

Fred, will there still be a talent show at the dinner?  Some of us may have to train for that too.

I wonder when the first Newbies will start to post and give an intro? Could it be that this year we'll only have oldtimers?

Oh my God, I forgot about Bill the Cat.

Where is Iron Penquin these days? I remember him being pretty instrumental in that talent show. I ran into him at Lake Placid in about 2002 and 2004 maybe but haven't heard from Mike since then.

What about Terry Hollis ? Wasn't he a FLA native? Where is he these days? I will never forget Terry looking at the glazed look in my eye the morning of my maiden iron voyage in 2000. He grabbed me, zipped up my wetsuit, smiled at me and said, "Now let's go do this thing". It was just the encouragement I needed.

Remember that huge chunk of wood that I broke my toe on in 2000? Fred pulled it out of the water and placed it on display near the More Stones rock garden. Or maybe Chuck Peltz did it .....

Irontoe,

I think they moved it to the Olympic Training center loby.

I love that dazed look that Newbies have just before the gun goes off.
Have not heard from Penguin since before Christmas.

Spring has started and we had 8" of rain last week and more coming tomorrow. How's everyone else doing getting ready?
Thought for the day: It's mostly up to you!

Greetings Tribe. Good to be back on the forum and see the chatter. Wish everyone the best in their '08 training and racing schedule. Missed GFT in '07 because of IM Louisville. Planning on being back in Clermont this year with a large contingent from the Virgin Islands. Hope to see everyone then. - IronScott GFT '05, '06

E-Dad: I hope to have several Virgin Islanders with me. Our local Tri Club, Team Cruzan Confusion, took several members to run the ING Miami Marathon and we had a blast. - Yeah, it was only a Marathon but can I please call it a training run? :)

There are about a half dozen people quasi-committed. We'll all do the St Croix IM 70.3 which is closer in effort to a Tri 101 or more. Because of that, it doesn't take a great deal of additional training to ramp up to 140.6. (At least that's what I'm telling them *grin*. There are 2 GFT alumni, including me, and one FC alumni in the group. The rest are GFT/Iron Virgins.

JeffreyB: I skipped the GFT last year to do IMKY. L_O_V_E_D Louisville! The volunteers were amazing! The run is as tough or tougher than GFT. You do a 2x 6 mile out and back. Not much elevation but GOD was it hot!!! The bike was about the same with some great climbs and lots of rolling hills. Now the swim... Don't know if you heard but IM changed the swim from a mass start to a time trial start. The rains in Ohio had the river at 6+ knots; almost impossible to swim into. We would have drowned! They moved us all upriver about a mile and started us inside of Towhead Island at one second intervals. NOT WETSUIT LEGAL!  It took me 45 minutes to swim the first 1200 meters into the current and less than 40 minutes to swim the rest with the current. WICKED :) Then there was the debris!!! Logs bigger than me tumbling down the river. Give me the Gators of Mineola any time!!! - I'm making it sound bad but it was a wonderful event and I definitely would do it again. FYI, we stayed at the Galt house and it was uber convenient. Have fun and good luck!

Well as of today we have 6 months of training and 10 days of rest until race day. I hope everyone has managed to get through all the bad weather.  This weekend I hope to get my bike out of the garage.
I noticed on the list that we have a bunch of us doing IM on our 50th. We'll have to have our own over the hill party.   Fred can all of us turning 50 for GFT this year hold a party on the back side of sugarloaf? Or how about you have a photographer take special pics. of us going down hill and picking up speed. You'll know which ones to shoot because we'll have the black "over the hill" balloons tied to our bikes.
Newbies: it's time to post your profile!
