But Shakesphere also said;
Once more into the breach, dear firends, once more; ...
Imitate the action of the tiger; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood...
And gentlemen in England now a-bed shall think themselves accursed they were not here...
Now, beshrew my father's ambition! .. I was created with a stubborn out side, with an aspect of iron..

Very good! But not enough to convince me to do it again . . . this year. Remember, the desire to pursue and achieve the goal has to come from within. And as I've said, I still want to do it, but not enough to be exhausted all the time. Maybe next year . . . . maybe not.
Where's that passage from?

I have lots of time to read the classics while spinning in the garage .
Of course my kids just think I'm old enough that I went to school with Will.
So I'll ask again... so who will be at GFT 08? |

Good morning!
I'm still scratching my head in wonder, how I can pick up a pound and a-half instead of droping one like I planned this week?
Rich, congrats on IM Brazil! So what's next for you?
The weather here is perfect today. I'm thinking about quitting my job and becoming a pro athlete and going for a long bike ride. Either that or become a Park Ranger?? |

Ready for the Weekend? 18 weeks left
Yesterday I had a very good run and for a moment I felt like I just might still have it in me?
Pixie, If you are 100% sure you're not racing I'm sure Fred would like to have your help. And if you did come help my brother and I really need a support crew.
This weekends plan; Sat. Bike 50, swim 1 mi., run EZ 1 hr. Sun. Bike 35, Swim 1 mi.
Thought for the day: Gas prices don't affect my bike!
Matt Hill, are you going to GFT this year? Please e-mail me mbrown@qualex.com |

Hey Enduradad,
I am getting closer to committing to GFT 08. We finished this weekend with Sat. (70mi. bike/3mi. R) Sun. 6mi.R. With Sue doing IMFL, I know I'll have most of my long training in with her, I just need to find a little bit more motivation for "chasing the setting sun" at GFT. I have never caught it yet there. It always seems to go down on me during the last lap of the run before I can cross the finish line . BUT one day, Maybe....I' will beat it to the line. If the centuries in the next couple of months go well, and I can keep at it, I'll see the tribe at GFT. By the way, is the bike course going to be mostly on the flats this year??

Bubba,
You're a real lucky man to be able to train with your wife!
This weekend went ok, but I had less training time than I had hoped for. I'm at that point where my body is really rebeling against the ramp-up. That little voice is there telling me that If I'm dead tired after a 2 hour ride how will I ever go all day? Good thing I've done this before. I tried something different on my bike ride yesterday. I usually go out easy and then come back all out. This time I started as fast as I could and tried to hold it past the half way mark. My thinking was that then I'd have to ride the second half really tired and that it would make it better for me at GFT. The last six miles really hurt! By the 4th I have to be ready to double my miles and ride with my brother. OUCH!
Thought for the day: It good when your kids see you play! |

4 months as of today. Anyone worried yet?
Before everyone kept telling me IM would kill me. Now everyone wants to know why I couldn't find something easier to do for my 50th birthday? I guess it's because I think I still can? |

Last night on my long run I felt a pain in my knee and started calculating how long it would take to heal up. Then I changed sides of the road and it went away. |

4 months as of today. Anyone worried yet? I am not worried because mine was a month ago from today!!! It is really weird having my IM already done for year. The pressure is really off me because I don't have to tell myself "man, you got to get that xx mile ride or xx mile run in this weekend". I am just signing up for local sprint and oly races and having a blast. Maybe if I am so inclined, I might even do a 1/2 IM in the fall.
As far as being 50 and doing another IM - heck, just enjoy it and be thankful you are still able to toe the line (or the shore). The toughest part of doing these things as you get older is learning to accept the fact that all your PRs are going to be in your "rearview mirror". That is truly the tough part.

But Rich.... Joe Bonness would do another race this year, so why don't you show up at GFT? Last night Susan gave me my weekend workout list, so I'm doing a Brick this weekend. She wants the patio bricks done before the 4th. Does that count as strength or stretching?

Ah, no disrespect to Joe, but he is a genetic freak. Besides, he is younger than me!!!!
Talk about bizzare, I started my brick workouts last weekend. Our patio had settled and the water wasn't running away from the house so I am redoing the entire patio. Started with the delivery of 2 1/2 tons of sand which had to be wheeled all the way around the house. Then started tearing up the pavers so I could rasie the base then start laying them back down. I am so tired of bending over, nealing, bending over, nealing, pounding the pavers into the sand.....repeat the process over and over. The project has been long over due and I can't use the IM training for an excuse anymore.

Bad storms coming through right now. I hope they are gone before I get home and out on the bike.
Hmmm I wonder what it would be like with a 30-40 mph tailwind? With my luck it would be a head wind.
For anyone scheduling your trip. I plan on getting to Clearmont Wed. 10/22 so that Thur. I can drive the bike route, Bike the run, take a short swim, and check in. I would love to plan a group outing.

E-Dad, Count me in for pre-race activities. I'll be getting in late am on Thursday, check into hotel, and then on to the expo. Then hang around Waterfront Park, get in a swim, while waiting for the "free" pasta feed. I don't worry too much about driving the bike course. In the past few years, we've had a very accurate course description posted on the forum from one of the locals. GFT has also provided a google map showing the course, anyway. If the course is two loops, you know it's going to be painful!! Kerry Riggs |

I agree that I don't need to see the bike, but it would be fun to take some newbies around in the van and get to talk about the race. I hope to borrow someones support crew to ice down the sparkling grape juice and take some extra pics.
The storms last night canceled my bike ride, but I think I needed the rest anyway. I just get worried that I won't get enough miles in. Thought for the day: If quitters never win, and Winners never quit, then who thought up the saying "Quite while you're ahead"? GFT is in 17 weeks, keep TRIing!

"The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated." Mark Twain ...and IronPenguin... Enduradad, Kerry and Bubba: Yes, I'm still alive, tho flirting with the big 6-0 in August. And for a number of reasons, I think my IM days are over. I managed to finish 9 and had hoped for 10, but after #9 three years ago, I just didn't have the drive to train for and complete #10. Without that drive, it's not real smart to attempt it, so I backed off. Also, I retired from the National Park Service then un-retired to become part-time Athletic Director and P.E coach for a small Catholic Middle school where I've volunteered coaching for several years. That took a lot of time and energy and helped force my decision. However, that didin't completely stop my distance challenges. My wife (Toni) and I did the Goofy Challenge at Disney two years ago (that's the Half-Marathon on Saturday, full Marathon on Sunday) and she enjoyed it, so we did the Gasparilla Challenge in Tampa this year (15K-5K back to back on Saturday, Full marathon on Sunday.) Last December Toni managed to qualify for Boston, so my real goal for this year is to qualify myself so we can run it together in '09. My goal race is Jacksonville in December. At 60, I "only" have to 4 hours, so I have a reasonable shot. I'll try to check in every now and then to encourage the slower IronVirgins and catch up with the old Tribe members. Who knows, I might even manage to sneak down for the race and volunteer or something! IP |

Hi All,
WOW I recently plugged back into the forum after a short hiatus of about 8 or 9 years, but hey, once and IM.......
I was thrilled to see that a few of the long time Tribe members are still out there, and seeing IronPenguin's post gave me the incentive to drop in and say hi to all.
Hey Pen.....if your coming back to Tampa let me know.
So the fun story is that I lost my IM virginity in 1999 at GFT IX. For all those that have been around a long time that was the first year of the "Stone Garden". I'm not sure if that tradition has continued over the years, but we all learned from that IM sage Yakabo, the true meaning of "More Stones". I had my then young children paint the best rock we could find which was carefully placed with the 100 plus others before the race. That and the toe painting gave us just the right amount of mo jo we needed to get through the long IM day.
So why now?
Well the first of the kids go off to college this year and the other child is now 16 and pretty self sufficient. Second, I retired from coaching competitive soccer. Both of these have given me a lot of time back and incentive to get off the couch.
Also it will be exactly 10 years in 2009 since I completed my first and only IM so it has become the long term goal of mine to return to the scene and complete the GFT XIX.
So I have been taking the small steps necessary to prepare which will culminate for this year with the Florida Challenge. My thinking is that a half this year would give me plenty of mo going into next years training. So far what I'm finding is that it is way more difficult to lose the weight, and I'm way slower in all events, but hey, that is what 8 years of relitive inactivity will do.
Have stayed in touch with a few Tribe members over the years, mostly Monkeyboy, who is planning on doing the Assult on Sugarloaf with me in September. The man is still the best......
I hear from Toe accasionally, who thank god made it though a bout cancer, and is active as always. Truley one of the best personalities in our sport.
So I'm done rambling as work is calling me. Hope everybody is doing great.
Train Safe!
