IP - Great to hear that you are still out there doing it.
It is pretty strange how we have the same goals for the year. My plan is to do the Grand Rapids marathon in October and hope to qualify for Boston. I have the same goal of 4 hours and I too think I have a good shot at it if I stay with the training program. After I get done with that it is on to Disney in January for my wife, son and me to do the Goofy Challenge. We also did sign up for the 5K on Friday so that will make it a 5k on Friday, 1/2 marathon on Saturday and then a full marathon on Sunday. If everything does work out, it will then be on to Boston next April. That will be 3 marathons and an IM in less than 11 months. One of these days, I have to grow up and get a life!!
Maybe we could get Fred to put together a triathlon version of the Goofy Challenge. An Oly distance on Friday, a half IM on Saturday, and then a full IM on Sunday. What sort of special medal would you get for completing that challenge? Who's in???
Hopefully we can get a few members of the Tribe to check back in. |

Rich G, It gets stranger about the goals ... Toni and I are also signed up for the Goofy Challenge! Maybe we can get together while there. Sounds like a pretty tough schedule, but do-able. Believe it or not, I did New York two weeks after GFT one year. At the time it was the stupidest thing I'd ever done. LOL Regarding Boston - We don't plan to run it hard, just enjoy it. Icing on the cake. Ironcoach - good to hear from you, too. I'm afraid the rock garden faded away, but "More Stones" is still occasionally heard. We'll have to post why later on. Mike T. |

So glad some of you are back to the forum. Penguin, congrats on 60, I turned 50 Sat. As for the challenge, you could call it the INSANE challenge.
Well I spent the last week recovering from kidney stones so anything IM sends my way wil be easy to take. Now I need to catch up on training. I had planned lots of time on the bike with my brothrer while he was in town, but now I guess I'll just go solo.

Hi Guys,
Congratulations to both Penguin and E-Dad on big birthdays. That is great stuff gentlemen, and we all know how much fun it can be moving up an age group.
I think we all need more 3 day weekends. Not only did the 3 days give me more time to train, but also a whole weekend day off. If you can do both the miles planned and still have time off that is really the best of all worlds.
It has really gotten hot here in FL guys. Let's hope it cools off for the October races.
So what did happened to the Rock Garden?

My thought for the day is NO more stones !
For my lunch today I have to recalculate how many vacation days I have left for the trip. My guess is I will have to move my arrival date back to Thursday. That's bad because I wanted to get not have to recover from driving on Thur.
On ESPN radio today Colin Cowheard was asking what sport you get better at with age? Several IM called to say that's our sport~! He tried to say it's because no one gets into it unitl they are 30? Maybe so, but it sure seems the old guys keep getting faster to me.
I know that the year I turned 45 I raced at a sprint race that had 4 college teams competing. I finished 3 min. better than I had ever done. I finished 7th over-all. I just knew I would finally get a first place. Intead I finished third? I beat everyone under 30, yet 3 of the top 7 were 45????? How??? Rich G. always beats me by one hour! and we won't discuss Joe Bonness...
So let's see if at 50 I can have my best race?

Kidney stones? Ouch!!!! I am guessing you didn't have that on the training plan. I hope they have all passed and no others form.
We had perfect weather around us over the 3 day weekend. It was so nice to be able to go out for a long run and not have squishy shoes by the finish. Training in nice weather definitely gives you a mental boost. However, the heat and humidty has now arrived. I ran over the lunch hour and the socks and shoes were soaked by the end of the 5 miles - not squishy but soaked.
Did you get that brick patio all done by the 4th? I am still working on ours.

Well I got 7 1/2 mile run in last night and a 1 1/2 hour bike this morning, so things are going good right now.
I was ready to quit last night at 5, but when I stopped for a water break another guy ran by and I thought "Hmm I think I could keep up with him", so I did. Before that I thought of several reasons to quite, funny how easy it is when you have something to focus on. |

Ironpenguin,
Boy, am I glad to see you back on the forum! Even better to hear to hear that you're doing real well. You've always shown alot of class, at the GFT and on the forum. Many times your words came back to me throughout the long nights circling the lake. Not to mention all of the finishers who may not have made it w/o your words of wisdom. Great to hear from you! Great to hear from Tony Guerra, too. Now where's Yakabo? And Handwerker?
E-dad, I had a 4.5 hour bike ride on Sunday, got cut short by a t-storm. That sucked. Come September we'll have to start nailing these workouts, no matter what.
I'm working on the swim, I think I can make 1:20-1:30 which is good for me. I need ALOT of work on the bike. Rich Strauss says the key for the bike is to be able to "not slow down on the run". What good is it to have a great bike ride, then lose it all on the run? Then there is this throat thingy that haunts me...
Anyone know when the website will be up? It would be nice to see a countdown clock, course maps and participant list.
Oh well, 15 or so weeks left til the big dance. Seems like last week we were looking at over 300 days til race day. Time flies, so make those miles count!

Hi All,
I came off the 3 day weekend felling great after putting in 2 bricks sandwitched between a day off. I was naturally a little sluggish this week, but wanted to go easy anyway since I'm doing a sprint on Sunday.
The mistake was picking up the race packet last night. Everyone there was thin and fit.....which intimidated me to no end. So now with no training before the race I can add one other thnig to worry about.
Hope everyone has a fun and safe weekend training.

IronCoach:
Where in Florida do you live? I'm in Auburndale and also doing a sprint Sunday in Sebring. The afternoon thunderstorms have really put the crunch on my after-work bike rides.
Forget about the other triathletes: do your own race against the clock. Good luck!
Enduradad: you're an inspiration - you go, dude!

Hi Pixie, I'm actually in Tampa, so I'm doing Sand Key. Looks like a pretty fun course, over 3 causways on the bike. Usually I'm pretty mello but I've been away for a while. Everyone looks way too fast....... Anyway have a great race this weekend. IC |

I hope everyone does well this weekend. I've had a good week with a couple doubles. Most of my family's out of town this weekend and so tonight I get to bike, swim, and mow.

Good luck with the mowing. I'm sure there's some sort of aerobic benefit to it, too.
Anybody know what the bike course is going to look like this year? I have to know how hard to torture myself with hill training over the next 12 weeks ;-)

Coach & Pix, How did your race go? Tony, I second that thought. If we have to train for the two loop course I'd like to change my training route.
Thought for the day: Sweat washes out places that a shower will never reach! If that's true we'll be pretty cleaned up by the end of this summer! I'll be off the rest of this week to get the other stone out. (ouch!) |

Hi E-dad and Tribe,
The race this weekend in Clearwater got washed out. Weather at the beach was windy, raining in bunches and lots of light shows over the gulf. While it was a real disapointment when you point to a race for it to get pulled like that it was the right decision. They are unsure about a re-schedule, but that is always tough for the organizers and for the athletes, so every weekend seems to be accounted for, especially with kids in the house.
Anyway I used the pent up energy to go our in the afternoon for a very solid, and maybe a bit frustrated brick. Probably the hardest 20 miles I road this year, and had a decent 3 mile run after. Still got plenty wet, but no thunder or lightning in the area.
Pixie, how did it go over your way?
Anyone else race this weekend?
Have a good and safe training week!!!!

I talked to Andrea at GFT and she said the plan is to do the East loop over Sugarloaf and then go West through the flats in Sumter county.

Hi EnduraDad and IronCoach!
Thanks for checking in to find out how our races went this weekend. IC: I was thinking about you going over those 3 overpasses when it started pouring on us in the bike leg. Sorry to hear your event was cancelled. Afternoon storms are almost an everyday occurrence here in Central Florida, but morning storms are rare. Our event went on as scheduled. It poured while I was on the bike, the wind increased, but there was no lightning. We were very lucky. Of course, there was a lot of water in everyone's running shoes when we got back to the bike corral! And the streets were full of water so we splashed through a lot of puddles on the run. I told someone I thought we had already finished the swim! Didn't have to take any water at the water stops. It was still sprinking so all I had to do was open my mouth.
Dave Scott was the featured guest and he was great. He couldn't race, though. I think he was recovering from a blood clot in his leg. He was very down to earth. When he handed out awards, he said a few words to every athlete.
You can check out my results if you go to race results and find your way to the age group results for the Heartland Triathlon (4th in age group 40-44). I'm pleased w/ my results esp. since I spent the entire pre-season focusing on distance instead of speed work. By the way, the woman who is right ahead of me in the results drafted me on the bike. After she passed me, she drafted the woman in front of me for a good distance. Should I have reported her to the race ref?
Good luck w/ that stone, EnduraDad.

This is how the course went last year, except it was backwards from the way I had been training on it. Instead of going west on Cherry Lake (correct road name?) and then north, it went east on the bike trail out of Clermont. Pixie

Sounds like one ginormous, though short, hill (Sugarloaf) and a few lesser ones, with most of the course being flatter. Reminds me of the courses back in '95-'98 (except for that damn Sugarloaf ;-). I'll stick with an 11-21 or 11-23 (on a 650c bike) cassette and a 53/39 crankset, then.
I see 8 to 10 weeks of Computrainer sessions in my future...
