Rich,  I won't be carrying them this time. I'm going solo, except for my little brother Cliff (not Choo Choo) we are racing each other.

The twins and I do have a plan though. I carried them across the line as 2 year olds, they plan on racing me when they are 22. That's when I turn 60 and I told them I'd still be able to beat them .  How embarrassing would that be? I figure you always beat me by more than an hour, so I should be able to get faster between now and then too. Susan and I should have all the kids out of the house so I can train all the time and she'll be my support crew on the trips like Peg.
Of course you will probably still be stomping my butt too! and that should keep me humble.
So see you at IM Brazil or Austrailia in 2018? .

"Please ignore Tony, he finishes so early he goes back cleans up, takes a nap, and then comes back.

Now that I think about it, Joe B. may be fast enough to win his A/G at IMH and then win GFT, but I've never seen him at the finish?  What a sissy!"

I plan on being there for the last Ironmen and Women to cross the line.  I bought Crispin Baynes' race entry this year, so as soon as it transfers over you'll see my name in the lists.  I'll be coming down on the 23rd, in time for most of the festivities ;-)  The wife isn't coming down until the day after the race but I hope to have her there at the awards banquet.  Don't get freaked out by the below plan for the rest of this week.  I always go long during this time of the year:

Today:

2,500 swim (did this morning)

1:10:00 run (2x20 min. tempo pace inserts)

1:00:00 bike (easy recovery spin)

Tomorrow:

3,000 swim - 5:00:00 bike - 50:00 run (different intensities and inserts during the bike, race pace or better on the run)

Sunday:

1:45:00 run

1:00:00 bike

There's an Olympic-distance race down in Sylvania, Ohio that I'm doing on the 10th of August, then a Sprint-distance race up in Novi, Michigan on the 17th.  After that, I'll do a half-Ironman sometime in early September to gauge where I'm at and what I need to work on for the GFT.

You guys will do great.  And will go faster than you think you're capable of.  Of that I have no doubt.

Tony,

Are you back in Michigan again?  Last I heard I thought you were back out in Hawaii.

If you are back in MI, you are getting all the same lovely weather that E-Dad and I are getting.  I spend more time trying to dry out my running shoes.  As a scientific experient, I would love to know how many gallons/pounds of sweat I have lost the last month or so because of our humidity.  It has been 90+% humidity almost every morning this last week.  That is just wrong.  Oh to go out for a long run with the sun shining, 45 to 50 degree temp and humidity about 30% - I am guessing I will have to wait until October for that.

Be careful out there

Hey, Rich.  Yup, transferred back to Michigan last year.  The weather down here in the Downriver communities south of Detroit's been fine lately.  Great sunny and warm day, today.  Since the rains stopped back in mid-July, I've had no big complaints.  But that's why I use the heck out of my Computrainer and treadmill ;-)

Hi All,

Well I certainly have not kept pace on the board lately. Work has been tough and training has been rough. 2 weeks ago wnet out for an 85 mile bike ride and allwas well for 78. Man did I ever hit the wall and frankly it took a long time to recover.

The good news was that I had a recovery week planned as I traveled to Bermuda for business. I was able to swim and run there, but nothing too agressive. Last week went better as I got back in the grove. Remember I'm only doing the half this year, so i think the milage and time training is appropriate to the distance.

Enduradad, forgot you had twins. I was looking at the old GFT pictures from "99" with my twins and daughter running along side of me at the finish. Pretty cool......Of course next weekend I take one of the twins to college as he starts soccer and the other will follow in a few weeks. Man they grow up fast.

KAR, read your post about the old/new course. I have only done that one 2 times and found it to be pretty reasonable. Once through the initial 35-40 miles it levels out for a long time. I have not re-looked at it, but one year the course actually went about 115 on the bike.....I thought it was just my computer, but everone around me was saying the same thing. Funny how cranky you can get over 3 miles, but there comes a time after the heat, hills and time out there that you just need off the bike.

Anyway I hope everyone is doing great and hitting it hard as we approach the final 90 days or so of training.

IMC , I didn't know we both had twins in soccer.  What school will they be going to?
This weekend I had a sinus problem with to much lake water. That knocked out my Sat. plans. Today we are having a heat index of 105. I'm really tired of spinning.
This Friday I got to the ciropractor to get straightened out.

Ironcoach,

I don't remember what year it was, my bike computer had me at 117.5 on the bike. I guess we made up for the swim distance being short.

I did not get to do the GFT last year, I felt unprepared, just too many of lifes interruptions. But, it looks like we're getting away from the "horrible double". I did not like the two loop format for the bike, only because, in the second lap, we seemed to have some aid stations unmanned or just plain out of ice, water, etc. I just thought it was too much to ask someone to be out there for eight hours or more at an aid station. And, we're doing Buckhill in a different direction. It seems not as difficult from this direction. But after Buckhill, watch out for that "wall" right after the left turn! Also, there is lots of free speed on the course, but be careful with all of the "blind" turns. (Jalarmey Rd.)And make sure your bike is tuned up beforehand. You'll be changing gears like you never thought you would!

 E-Dad,
No more hills on the first five miles of the run! Remember the run on Pitt Street, and up and down those steep neighborhood hills? Run is pretty much all flat. Still can't figure out why the GFT is the only time my feet blister. Maybe it's that "Night of the Living Dead" shuffle I'm doing around the lake. And with all of the Halloween decorations, the road around the lake can get really dark and downright spooky in some places. Ooh, can't wait...

KAR, maybe you get the blisters because you've skipped the toe nail painting? BIG MOE JO!

I'm so glad to hear that we won't be slapped with the hills on the first 5 of the run, that really hurt!

My son just announced last night that he's signing up for the Marines.  So I told him he needs to get out of bed the next two months and train with me.

I'm lovin' this course more and more as the info comes in.  I expect you'll see a few of the last minute "go-fast" types jump in the race as the word gets around about the changes to the bike and run.  With IMH two weeks prior, there's plenty of time for several of those folks to rest up a week and then hit the GFT.

A regular 9 speed 11/12-23 or 25, or a 10 speed 11-23 or 12-23 or 12-25 ought to do the trick.  I did the old course once with an 11-21 9 speed.  My legs were hammered into jelly by the second loop, for some reason :-)  Maybe only doing 9 weeks of training, in total, for the race had something to do with it.

Enduradad, the boys are heading in different directions so to speak. One of the guys is heading to Barry in Miami Shores to play. He is all about the game, in fact if you were to ask him what he is studying he would probably reply soccer. His brother is pretty much done with soccer competitivly speaking. He will probably play over in Orlando wants he settles into school recreationally. Both of the guys played since 5 and it really helped them stay active and somewhat out of trouble. I have a daughter that also plays and is a HS jr this year. She will likely not play in college, but has the tools, just not the desire.

Funny how much energy I've spent trying to figure out when I can get that next long ride in. Since I have to take one son to Miami this weekend I'm actually thinking of taking a half day off work on Friday to train. Yea.....it's starting to get in my head......

Hope everyone is training great this week.

IMC, We probably do a lot the same.  I do my runs while my one of my daughters takes riding lessons. Sat. I start coaching soccer and I'm trying to convince my wife that dosen't count as my training time, but family time.   Where are you staying?  when will you be geting to GFT? Who all will be with you?

E-dad,

I'm staying at the Fairfield. Breaking tradition here since it ususally is Vacation Village, but since I'm only doing the half this year, I'm trying not to make it too much of an event. As for who is traveling with me, probably the beautiful bride of 25 years and the #1 daughter. She is actually doing her first adult race this weekend, just a mini, but it will be a fun race for her.

Coaching.....I have to tell you that was a great experience, but it becomes very consuming and work, training and family time all suffer. I put in 10 years, the last 6 were with competitive teams, was on the Board of the club for 4 years and was the Club President for 2 years. Can you say excessive, compulsive......

Actually it was a very good experience, and I had a great time watching the players develop in the game and as people. Having said that it was time to let some younger people take over the reins. That is how I landed back into tri's. That was always the plan, to get back to something I enjoy and I can do at my own time and pace. I can tell you that the pace is pretty slow.....

Anyway hope everyone is having a great trainning week and a safe weekend.

IMC, We must be twins. I've coached 12 years and the twins are on a travel team. I just passed my E-coaching license. I like it when I have a player make it to college and get a scholarship.

My second daughter (Abby 16) has the itch now and next year we plan on doing a sprint class TRI.

To all: So for race day what music do we want Fred to play?
"Start me up",    "I'm so Excited",
how about this one......   I Feel Good, na, na, na... like I knew that I would now......  so good, so good    , na, na, na, na

No way do we want "Against the wind", but I could take "Like a rock".

Temps for this weekend are going to drop.. Yeah!

With the opening of the XXIX Summer Olympiad in Beijing, Onion Sports looks back on moments from the past that passed forever into legend:

490 B.C.: Pheidippides completes the first-ever marathon and incites centuries of Olympic challengers when he says "Beat that" as he drops dead on the ground

1936: Jessie Owens wins four gold medals at Hitler's Berlin Olympics, crediting his fantastic performance to something deep inside telling him to run like hell

1960: Ethiopian Abebe Bikila manages to win a gold in the marathon despite being barefoot, showing up a half-hour late, and having never run before in his life

1988: The Seoul Olympic opening ceremonies are quickly recognized as the best in history when they end in under 20 minutes

1992: When his hamstring snaps halfway through the 400 meter semifinal, Derek Redmond is helped across the finish line by his father, a majestic human image which, if you don't weep every time you see it, means you're a heartless asshole who should just die right now for all you're worth

Happy Monday,

Hope that everyone had a fun, safe and strong weekend. As noted above this weekend for me was getting one son off to college for soccer, so i settled for a 2:15 wind trainer session and that was it. Funny though my speed picked up 2mph when they showed the USA fensers getting their medals and hearing the Star Spangled Banner.

So I have plenty of energy today starting the week and will hopefully carry that into next weekends planned long weekend. The following weekend we take the other son but he is closer to home and in fact is going to be about 30 minutes from Clermont so I can see a ride up Sugarloaf in my future that weekend.

Due to the events of the weekend I also missed my daughter racing her first adult event. She tells me it was really fun and sounds ready to pick it up, but soccer is still her sport. I can see us doing a race together, possibly next spring.

Have a great week Tribe!

This weather could not be any better!

My son has already hurt himself from over training. He thought that since Dad's running 7 1/2's he could get out of bed and just do it first day.  So this morning I put him on my bike trainer, so he could recover.

I still can't find who all we have on the TRI team for the Olympics? They race next week? Does anyone know if there will be any coverage?

Well with the weather cooling down, tonight I will break out the suit and make my swim easy again. The kids call it my Batman suit.

Rich, I have my shirt out for Susan to cut up and make my "sleeves" now I just have to figure out how to get it to the top of her "to-do list"?
